Vibe Coding: What It Is and Why Small Businesses Should Care
Share
You have an idea for a small tool that could save your team hours every week.
Maybe it’s a simple order tracker. A dashboard that pulls important information into one place. A tool for generating product descriptions. Or a tiny internal system that replaces the spreadsheet everyone keeps forgetting to update.
A few years ago, the next step would have been obvious: find a developer.
Today, you might just describe what you want to AI — and start building it yourself.
Welcome to vibe coding.
So, what exactly is vibe coding?
Vibe coding is a new way of building software with the help of AI.
Instead of writing every line of code yourself, you explain what you want in normal language. An AI coding tool generates the code, you test the result, tell it what needs changing, and keep going.
It can feel surprisingly simple:
“Build me a dashboard where I can see open orders, their status and the person responsible.”
Then:
“Add a filter for overdue orders.”
Then:
“Make overdue orders easier to notice.”
You’re still directing the project. You just don’t necessarily need to know exactly how everything is coded behind the scenes.
That changes who can build software.
Why is everyone talking about it?
Because the gap between having an idea and building something useful is getting much smaller.
Business owners have always had ideas for tools that would make their work easier.
The problem was that many of those ideas were too small to justify hiring a developer or spending weeks planning a software project.
So they stayed as ideas.
Vibe coding changes that.
A simple internal tool can potentially go from:
“Someone should really build this.”
to:
“I made a first version this afternoon.”
That is a big shift — especially for small businesses.

Where vibe coding gets interesting for small businesses
You probably don’t need to build the next Shopify.
But there are dozens of small problems inside a business that software could solve.
For an e-commerce business, that could mean creating a simple tool that flags products with missing descriptions, tracks supplier information, organises product data before uploading it to Shopify or WooCommerce, or turns messy operational data into a useful dashboard.
For a service business, it might be an internal client tracker, a quote generator, a project dashboard or a small system for collecting information before onboarding a new client.
These aren't necessarily products you would sell.
They are tools that make your own business easier to run.
And that is where vibe coding becomes genuinely useful.
The real opportunity: solving the annoying little problems
Every business has them.
The spreadsheet that needs three manual updates.
The report that takes an hour to prepare every Friday.
The information copied from one system into another.
The five-step process that everyone knows could probably be two steps.
Individually, these tasks don’t look dramatic.
Together, they consume a surprising amount of time.
Vibe coding makes it easier to experiment with solutions without turning every improvement into a full IT project.
Instead of asking:
“Is this worth developing?”
you can start asking:
“Can we build a simple version and see if it helps?”
That mindset alone can change how quickly a small business improves its operations.
But there’s a catch
AI makes coding more accessible.
It does not make every piece of AI-generated software automatically good.
A tool can look like it works while still having problems underneath. Data can be handled incorrectly. Security can be weak. An AI-generated change can fix one thing and quietly break another.
And the more important the system becomes, the more those details matter.
So vibe coding is great for experimenting, prototyping and building simple internal tools.
But if you're dealing with customer data, payments, sensitive business information or anything business-critical, “it seems to work” isn't enough.
AI can help you build surprisingly fast.
Knowing what should — and shouldn't — be trusted to that tool is still a human decision.
You don't need to become a developer
This might be the most interesting part.
The goal isn't necessarily to turn every founder into a programmer.
It's to give business owners another way to solve problems.
You already know where your business wastes time.
You know which tasks are repetitive.
You know which spreadsheet makes everyone sigh.
You know which process you've been meaning to improve for six months.
Until recently, turning those observations into software required technical skills or a development budget.
Now, the first version might start with a conversation with AI.
And that makes experimentation much easier.
AI doesn't remove the work. It changes the work.
This is something we see happening across business in general.
AI is very good at helping people start faster.
Draft the email.
Create the spreadsheet.
Generate the product description.
Write the first version of the code.
But someone still needs to understand the business, check the output and make sure the result actually solves the problem.
The valuable skill is becoming less about doing every individual step manually — and more about knowing what should be done, how it should work and whether the result is actually useful.
Vibe coding is another example of that shift.
Start with one annoying task
You don't need an AI strategy meeting.
You don't need to rebuild your entire business.
Start smaller.
Think about one repetitive task in your business and ask:
“Could a tiny tool make this easier?”
Maybe the answer is no.
Maybe an existing app already solves it.
Or maybe something that has been taking your team hours every month can suddenly be handled in a few clicks.
That is the interesting part of vibe coding.
Not that everyone can now build software.
But that more people can turn everyday business problems into working solutions.
And sometimes, that small improvement is exactly what gives you more time to focus on the work that actually grows the business.
